Bring long-lasting natural texture and colour to creative projects with preserved moss from Koch & Co. Our range includes preserved reindeer moss, flat moss, forest moss, hair moss, rock moss, mood moss and decorative moss balls, giving florists, stylists, retailers and makers a variety of textures and formats to work with.
Preserved moss is real natural moss that has been treated to help retain its colour, texture and appearance for longer. Unlike fresh moss, it does not require watering, sunlight or ongoing plant care, making it a practical decorative material for terrariums, preserved flower arrangements, kokedama, moss walls, framed botanical art, retail displays, tablescapes, event décor, fairy gardens, model landscapes and craft projects.
Preserved Moss for Terrariums, Floristry & Decorative Displays
Different moss varieties create different effects. Flat and carpet-style mosses are useful for covering larger surfaces, while clumping varieties add height and dimension. Decorative moss balls provide ready-made accents for bowls, terrariums and botanical displays, while finer mosses can be tucked around plants, floral designs and decorative objects to create a more natural finish.
Preserved moss pairs well with preserved and dried flowers, foliage, artificial plants, timber, stone, glass and ceramic décor. Its versatility makes it suitable for small DIY projects as well as larger commercial installations and visual merchandising.
To narrow the range by type, explore Reindeer Moss for soft, textured coverage, Spanish Moss for trailing and thread-like texture, Moss Poles for plant support and botanical styling, or Other Decorative Mosses for additional preserved moss formats and textures.
Preserved moss should not be confused with Artificial Moss. Preserved moss starts as real moss and is treated to extend its decorative life, while artificial moss is manufactured from synthetic materials to imitate the appearance of natural moss.
Family owned and supplying the floral, gift and event industries since 1931, Koch & Co offers preserved moss for retail and wholesale customers, with options suited to floristry, event styling, retail displays and creative projects. Is preserved moss alive?
No. Preserved moss is real natural moss that has been treated to retain its colour, texture and appearance, but it is no longer living or actively growing. It does not need watering, sunlight or soil and is intended for decorative uses such as terrariums, kokedama, moss walls, framed botanical art and table styling.
Is preserved moss toxic?
Koch & Co preserved moss is chemically treated for decorative use using non-toxic treatments and dyes. It is not intended for consumption and should be used as a decorative material rather than as a living plant product.
Can preserved moss be revived?
No. Preserved moss cannot be revived or encouraged to grow again because the preservation process stops the moss from living. Adding water will not bring it back to life and may instead damage the moss, affect its colour or encourage mould.
Can preserved moss get wet?
Preserved moss is best kept dry. Small amounts used in floral or decorative projects may sometimes be reused two or three times before disposal, but repeated moisture can affect its texture and appearance. In closed or consistently wet environments, preserved moss may develop mould, and dyed colours can sometimes run or transfer when wet.
Does preserved moss go bad?
Preserved moss can last for a long time when kept dry, away from direct sunlight and protected from excessive humidity. Over time it may gradually fade, become brittle or lose some softness, particularly if exposed to moisture, heat or strong sunlight. It does not need watering or feeding to maintain its decorative appearance.
What is preserved moss?
Preserved moss is real moss that has been chemically treated to retain its natural-looking colour, softness and texture for decorative use. It is non-living and does not require watering or sunlight. Unlike fresh moss, preserved moss is not intended for regrowing, making it well suited to terrariums, moss walls, kokedama, fairy gardens, floral displays and other long-lasting decorative projects.
Is there a difference between dried and preserved moss?
Yes. Preserved moss has been treated to maintain its softness, colour and decorative appearance and cannot be revived or regrown. Dried moss has had its moisture removed and, depending on the species and how it was processed, some genuinely dried moss may become softer again when rehydrated. However, products sold as “dried moss” are sometimes actually preserved, so it is important to check the product description when comparing preserved moss vs dried moss.
Is imported preserved moss biosecurity compliant?
Imported preserved moss supplied by Koch & Co undergoes biosecurity treatment before entering Australia. Imported stock is fumigated with methyl bromide for at least 24 hours and accompanied by the required export certification, helping ensure it meets Australian import requirements for trade and wholesale supply.
