Candles have been used for illuminating rooms and homes for many years. The basic principle of a fuel being used to soak a wick which burns has been used in oil lamps as well. Unscented candles were more efficient than lamps because the fuel was solid and did not need a container. It was also less likely to spill.

Today, we use candles less as a primary source of light and more of an accessory to create the right ambience. Unscented candles are used singly or in groups to bring enough light in a room to be able to see. Candle light is ideal for creating intimacy because it closes the space around with darkness.

The flickering flame of a candle on a dining table brings to mind an open fire, but the light is gentler. You come closer to the other person to be able to see them, and whatever is not lit becomes unimportant.

The Many Uses for Our Unscented Candles

You could have a cluster of pillar candles standing in front of a mirror to reflect the light and make the room brighter. A similar cluster in a fire place could create the illusion of a fire but prettier. Pillar candles of different heights can be used to create an artistically lit area in the room.

A bowl of water in the centre of the room with floating candles lit in it gives the lighting a different character. Floating candles, especially unscented candles, can be used to unobtrusively light a corner without hogging the limelight. They could make an indoor pool or a fountain look ethereal.

If you do not want to clutter an area with multiple candles, you might want to place a single multi wick candle. This will give you multiple flames but without a lot of individual candles. Multi wick candles that are unscented will make a dinner table light up without your appetite being affected by the scent.

The dining area could be made even more interesting with an arrangement of wine glasses with tealight candles sitting inside them. If you have candle lanterns with interesting patterns, you could put tealight candles inside them and watch the walls come alive.

Even votive candles, which were used mainly as religious offerings, are now used to look pretty on a plate. If you are creative enough, you could use a combination of all these types of candles to create light and colour in a room.
