Anzac Day Poppy Buttonhole

Simple to make & easy to wear, this stylish poppy buttonhole is a great way to showcase your respect throughout the day’s services.

Below are all the supplies you will need to create your buttonhole.

Skill Level: Beginner

Instructions

Step 1. Cut your flowers & foliage

To create your Anzac Day Buttonhole, start by cutting your poppy 9cm down the stem with a pair of wire cutters. This length will allow for the poppy to be easily attached to your other sundries. Then cut a 9cm long sprig of rosemary to help create some volume around the poppy.

Step 2. Bend your poppy head

These poppy stems naturally face upwards, so to allow for the poppy head to face forwards and sit comfortably when pinned, gently bend the poppy head to one side so it is slightly bent.

Step 3. Tape your flower & foliage together

Position your sprig of rosemary behind your poppy stem and tape the ends together using your green parafilm tape. To securely tape them together, start at the top of the stems and twist the tape downwards, covering the entirety of the stem until you reach the bottom. Remove any excess tape to finish.

Step 4. Attach your ‘T’ pin

A corsage buttonhole 'T' pin allows you to easily attach the arrangement to your lapel, while also providing support to the arrangement. Place your ‘T’ pin on the back of your arrangement, making sure that the pin is facing outwards, and secure it with green parafilm tape. To secure the pin, use the same method you used to tape together your poppy and rosemary.

Step 5. Add your purple ribbon

To cover the green parafilm tape, thread your satin ribbon through the top of your ‘T’ pin and pull one end of the ribbon down the back of the stem. From the bottom, wrap the ribbon around the stem of the arrangement until you reach the top. Tie off the top of the ribbon and remove any excess ribbon.

And there you have it! Your completed ANZAC Day Poppy Buttonhole. These buttonholes are typically worn during memorial services as a mark of respect for the dead.

Note: Purple is a traditional colour of remembrance, but if you would like to use a different coloured ribbon you can browse a range of satin ribbons here.
