Step 1. Start with a ring
The easiest way to create a homemade wreath is to start with a round polystyrene wreath. The wreath will give your ANZAC Day wreath a nice, rounded shape and ensure it’s not too flat. It will also give you a structured base to work from and ensures that the shape of your wreath is never compromised.
Step 2. Add wreath wrap
To cover the polystyrene, add some green wreath wrap around the ring. The wrap will provide the perfect background for your added flowers and will ensure that you cannot see any of the white polystyrene. To use, simply wrap the wreath wrap around the ring, securing it with glue or mossing pins. The mossing pins can be pushed down deep into the polystyrene until you can’t see them.
Step 3. Add Poppies
The next step in making your ANZAC Day wreath is to add your poppies. Take your first poppy and remove the stem using wire cutters. Leave at least 2cm of stem for inserting the poppies into the wreath. Starting around the outer edge of the wreath, push the poppy through the wreath wrap and polystyrene wreath creating a small hole. Then remove the poppy and add a small amount of glue onto the end of the poppy stem. While the glue is still wet, insert the poppy back into the pre-made hole. The glue will ensure that the poppy doesn’t fall out when being handled.
Step 4. Repeat the process
Using the same method, repeat this process on the front and inside of the wreath so that it appears all sides are covered. Covering the back of the wreath is not necessary as this side will not be seen when it is displayed. Remember not to crowd your poppies, allowing room for the petals to drape naturally. If you crowd your poppies, you may create a bunched look and might not have enough flowers to finish your design.
And there you have it! Your completed ANZAC Day Poppy Wreath. These wreaths are typically given to soldiers or lain at memorial sites or graves as a mark of respect for the dead.
Note: If you want to display your ANZAC Day Poppy Wreath on a stand, a wreath hanging easel is a perfect choice.
Red Poppies are the symbolic flower of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, and this classic wreath helps capture the beauty of this emblematic flower.
