Protect eyes, skin, and airways

When using spray paint of any type, there are several protective clothing options you may wish to consider for your safety and to facilitate clean-up. Examples include the use of:

  • Latex gloves
  • Protective eye wear
  • Protective mask
  • Long sleeves and pants

Shake well prior to use

Before using any spray paint, it’s important to shake it thoroughly.

Thoroughly shaking spray paint helps to blend the pigment. This, in turn, improves the flow and evenness of the spray, which improves the quality of your coverage and finish.

How to shake well:

  • Make sure your nozzle is clean and free of obstructions.
  • Hold the can firmly, keeping it upright.
  • Shake the can vigorously for at least 60 seconds. When shaking, your can should rattle. This indicates thorough mixing.

Koch tip: shake intermittently during use to maintain an even flow of colour.

Prevent overspray

Clear your workspace and cover surfaces or objects that can’t be moved.

Koch tip: in case of overspray, remove paint from non-perishables only with acrylic thinner or acetone.

Work in a well-ventilated area

  • Good airflow is essential for avoiding the ingestion of fumes during use.
  • Do not paint near heat or hot surfaces, nor ignition sources such as sparks, open flames, or pilot lights. Do not use near gas canisters. Do not smoke when using.
  • Food, beverages, and tobacco products should not be stored or consumed in the area where this material is in use.

Spray from the correct distance

Spraying paint from too close a distance will yield an undesirable finish such as drips, uneven coverage, cracks, or chunky & uneven ‘orange peel’ texture.

For optimal results, spray from the following distances:

  • Metallic : hold can upright 25-30cm from object. On fresh flowers and foam, spray at a distance of at least 30cm.
  • Non-Metallic: hold can upright 25-45cm from object. On fresh flowers and foam, spray at a distance of at least 45cm.

Coat applications

Unless aiming for a ‘distressed’ or ‘antique’ finish, we recommend application of a second or third coat for full and even coverage.

  • Apply a fine and even coat with smooth motions.
  • Only apply the next coat after the current coat has completely dried. Please note, humidity will adversely affect the drying time and quality.

Prevent nozzle blocking

To prevent the nozzle from blocking, once finished painting, turn the can upside down and spray out excess paint onto waste paper.

Koch tip: if your nozzle is blocked, follow the following steps:

  • Carefully remove your nozzle
  • Rinse the nozzle under warm water until dried paint or residue is removed. Gentle use of a small brush or toothpick can aid in this.
  • Dry the nozzle thoroughly before reattaching.
  • Test spray. If still blocked, repeat or replace.

Store safely

It’s vitally important to store spray paint safely in order to prevent injury, fire, or accident. When storing spray paint:

  • Ensure your storage area is cool (below 45 degrees Celsius), dry, and well-ventilated. Keep spray paint products away from direct sunlight, heat, sparks, open flames and other sources of ignition.
  • Keep away from potent oxidising agents, strong acids and bases.
  • Store cans upright to prevent leakage or discharge. Store with the lid firmly secured.
  • Keep out of reach of children and pets.
