How to Clean Vases: 4 DIY Methods

There are a variety of ways to clean a flower vase depending on the types of materials that you have. You can clean out your vases using many different household items! Learn how to clean vases using the most common methods.

1. Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you want to know how to clean vases using what is already in your home, this is the best bet. Simply fill your vase full of water. Then, add 2 tablespoons baking soda and 2 tablespoons white vinegar. Once the mixture begins to fizz, let it sit for two to four hours to loosen the stains. Afterwards, take a bottle brush or a soft cloth and clean out the mineral deposits. Finally, rinse the vase using warm water. Then, you can either let it air dry or dry it by patting it down with a clean cloth.

2. Denture Tablets

A more unconventional method of cleaning vases is by using denture tablets like Polident, as it can remove the stains that build up from tap water. To begin, fill the vase using water and then drop in one or two denture tablets. Larger vases will benefit from at least two. The mixture will begin to fizz up. At this point, you can set the vase aside and allow it to sit there and fizz throughout the night. In the morning, give the vase a good shake and then pour the mixture into the sink drain. Finally, wash and rinse the vase well. Then, pat it down with a soft cloth to dry it, or let it air dry.

3. Aspirin Tablets

Vases that are smaller and harder to scrub (like glass bottles) may be best cleaned using Aspirin or Alka-Seltzer tablets thanks to its fizz. First, fill the vase with hot water. Then, pop in one or two Aspirin or Alka-Seltzer tablets and let them work their fizzy magic. Once it has begun to fizz up, you can walk away and leave the vase out for up to four hours. Rinse the vase out using warm water. Allow the vase to air dry, or pat it down gently.

4. Dishwashing Liquid and Rice

Rice is a strong and yet gentle enough material that gently scrubs out the mineral deposits from a vase. Start by filling the vase with warm water in which you have added dishwashing liquid to create soapy water. Then, pour in a half cup of uncooked rice and two tablespoons of vinegar. Cover the top of the vase and shake it up for two or three minutes so the rice can chip away at the mineral deposits. Leave it overnight and then empty out the vase, wash it and then rinse well.

How do you clean a crystal vase?

Cleaning a crystal vase is fairly simple and requires two household items: salt and vinegar. Make a paste of a half teaspoon of salt mixed with a little white vinegar. Then, gently rub away the grime and allow it to sit for 10 minutes. Fill the vase with warm water and rinse it out. This will lift away the hard water stains and other mineral deposits without scratching the crystal.

How to remove water stains from a glass vase

Clean water stains from a glass vase by making a soapy solution with dishwashing liquid and warm water. Fill the vase one third of the way with this mixture. Afterwards, add one or two tablespoons of vinegar, left up to you to decide based on the size of the vase. Rinse out the vase and wipe it down to complete the process.

How do you clean a vase with a narrow neck?

The best way to dissolve mineral deposits inside a vase with a long neck (such as a glass bud vase) is to pour something fizzy or abrasive inside, such as a can of coke or similar soft drink. Pour it into the vase and then put your hand over the mouth of the base. Give it a gentle shake and then let it sit for four to six hours. Rinse the vase out with clean water and then let it air dry.
